Is it voodoo? Can it be mind play? Is it because we’re cheap? Or can it be simply because human beings would rather heal themselves by smelling a scent, then by taking a needle or swallowing a pill. Is aromatherapy the new feel good drug, well, actually no!

Aromatherapy dates back centuries. India and Egypt have been widely accepted as the countries where aromatherapy originated. In Egypt, the use of aromatherapy was a privilege, and thus only the Pharaohs and high priests were permitted to indulge in it. Even Cleopatra was a known believer in aromatherapy. From Egypt, the echoes of this new found healing spread to Arabia. From India it spread to China, Japan and Tibet. Dating back to the earliest stages of humanity, the use of aromatic type fumes has become apart of the daily lives and religious ceremonies for a lot of people, to the point of being sacred.

Unfortunately, with the 19th century came the arrival of modern medicine, and as can be predicted, people began to turn away from aromatherapy and desired to go through the new medicine. Thanks to French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattesfosse, the 1920s saw a revival in aromatherapy. Since the story goes, Rene severely burned himself in his lab and in order to stop the pain, he put his arm in the only cold substance that was available, which been a container of lavender essential oil. His burns healed quickly, with very little scarring. From that point on, Rene spent most of his life studying aromatherapy, or the healing power of scented healing oils.

Aromatherapy found it’s way into Britain in the 1950s;but it wasn’t until the 1980s when individuals in the United States began to become aware of aromatherapy. So, what is aromatherapy? Aromatherapy is the method of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for physical and psychological well being. Essential oils are the pure essence of a plant. It is important to keep in mind that perfume oils, also known as fragrances, are different than essential oils. Perfume oils and fragrances contain unnatural chemicals and can’t provide the benefits of essential oils.

Aromatherapy has been used to treat everything from the common cold to central nervous system disorders and diseases. Many people also look to aromatherapy to help relieve their mental and emotional disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Many essential oils have antibacterial and antiviral properties, these elements allow essential oils to be able to help eliminate stress, increase energy, enhance memory and stimulate natural healing.

Aromatherapy sounds nice, smells great and appears easy, but like everything else in life, there’s a catch and aromatherapy is no different. The fundamental aspects of aromatherapy are essential oils. These oils are highly concentrated liquids that can be harmful if not used properly. Essential oils should always be diluted before you put them on the skin. Some oils may cause allergic reactions in some people. Everybody is different. Simply because some oil doesn’t irritate your skin, does not mean it’s not going to irritate someone else. Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy as well as by those with asthma, epilepsy and other health conditions. Not all essential oils must be used in aromatherapy. Wormwood, penny royal, onion, camphor, wintergreen and rue are some of the oils to be avoided.

Aromatherapy is not the be all and end all, it’s just another step in the potential healing procedure. It’s not a miracle drug! It can’t cure major illnesses!

The term aromatherapy was first used in the 1920s by French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé. Gattefossé first discovered the wide ranging healing powers of natural oils after catching his arm burning down one day in his lab. In his attempt to released the fire, he forced his arm into the nearest bin of liquid, which just happened to be lavender oil. The burn healed quickly without a scar.

Aromatherapy is usually associated with alternative healing techniques. It is the procedure for using natural oils as a method to alter an individual’s mood or health. There are three main branches of aromatherapy. The first is home aromatherapy, which is self-treatment with aromatherapy products. The second is clinical aromatherapy. Clinical aromatherapy can be used as a pharmacological treatment in a clinical setting. The third branch is aromachology. Aromachology is the study of odors and their effects about the mind.

There are three common three procedures of aromatherapy use. The first is the usage of oil as a scent. Commonly, aromatherapy oils used for this function are found in candle form. With the scent level, certain plant oils activate the limbic system and the emotional centers of the brain. Aromatherapy candles are believed to be beneficial in creating alternate emotions.

The second common method of aromatherapy use is for a topical treatment. When certain plant oils are put on the skin, they activate thermal receptors and kill microbes and fungi. In many cases, natural oils are utilized to heal skin abrasions, just as Gattefossé used lavender oil to expedite the healing of his burn wounds.

The final common method of aromatherapy use is as an internal drug. For this purpose, natural oil medications must be prescribed. They are said to activate the immune system.

Aromatherapy, especially in the more developed countries of the world, is practically never used as the sole treatment for an ailment. Often, it is only used as a method of alternative medicine. However, many healthcare workers use aromatherapy techniques in combination with other more recognized treatments.

However, many individuals preach of the stress-relieving advantages of aromatherapy scents. In fact, aromatherapy is commonly used in spas as a method of relaxation. Skeptics argue that the important things about aromatherapy treatments are supported with little scientific research.

Persons interested in using aromatherapy techniques as a means of stress reduction have to first determine what natural oils will provide immunity in providing the emotional effect they desire. For example, honeysuckle oils are considered relaxing and rejuvenating, perfect for stress reduction after a long week at work. Likewise, rose oils are said to create a romantic atmosphere.

There could be several ways of looking at life and there could be several approaches to make sure that one has a long and healthy life. There could be medical ways of doing so, there could be psychological ways of doings so, by taking care of the diet and exercising could be another way to approach the subject. However, if you are someone who likes to water the roots and not the leaves should follow these five amazing essentials for a healthy long life.

1 – Slowing Down is the first secret to long, healthy and a happy life. In the modern day world we are running from one pole to the other. We have deadlines imposed so that we could world better and more efficiently. Unknowingly we are trying to compete with the machines. Forgetting it completely that we are not machine and human body has its own capabilities and limitations. Slowing down and acknowledging the body’s need to rest is very important as well. Hence, try to calm down and try not to squeeze yourself between schedules. Give time to yourself.

2 – Nourishing your body is another indispensable aspect of keeping oneself healthy. Eating food which has all the required components to keep the body working well is required. Skipping meals or grabbing junk food is the worst that you could do to your body. Healthier you would eat, the more health years you would be adding to your life. Green vegetables and essential vitamin intake in the daily diet would make a lot of difference.

3 – Exercising is another way of keeping the body healthy. While we exercise, the amount of oxygen which is dispensed is more and thus the body functions better. At the same time, this allows the body to be more active and helps it to build a strong immune system against the diseases. In case someone is not to inclined to have an exercising regime, taking a 30 minutes walk every day would be enough to keep your body in shape for good and healthier life.

4 – Facing the fears one has could also have positive effect on our body and health. Fear, anxiety, stress are the most negative feeling that could shatter the body and mind. The only way to keep away from these is to stand up and confront the same. Confronting a problem would mean that you face is and resolve it rather than hiding from it and being developing a fear. The fear would wreck your body and mind more than the actual problem can harm you.

5 – Practicing compassion may sound like a religious discourse to some but it works. Human kindness and compassion is an essential part of our personality. Ignoring that completely would hold you back from blossoming and thus to have a long healthy life. This can help control the stress and anxiety and would make a person go calmer.

All the other ways of ensuring a long life would be branching from the above five points. Fancy names and colored terms could be provided to those, but the basics would be the same as listed above.

Smells and scents influence all the aspects of our life. They play an important part in important facets of everyday living such as food, hygiene, clothing, and so forth. In fact, there is an art that deals with the impact of strong scents and smells on our moods. This art is more popularly known as Aromatherapy. It has been practiced as far back as a few thousand years ago. Ancient Egyptian frescoes relate how ancient Egyptians used Aromatherapy to calm their senses and to add some spice into their lifestyle.

Aromatherapy was also popular during the Medieval Ages. It has been reputed that the Crusaders used a combination of myrrh and frankincense to keep their tired troops in an excited state of constant preparedness. This tactic was also reputedly used by Napoleon to maintain the alertness of the French army. There are other records of princes of generals who have utilized this art to win battles or to scare away the opposition.

A recent Animal Planet program highlighted the influence of Aromatherapy on the animal kingdom. In this program, the producers listed out ten animals with the vilest scent in the entire animal kingdom. The skunk proved to be the smelliest critter in the whole world. Anyway, to return to the subject of Aromatherapy, bad smells are also a vital part of the art of scents and smells. Similar to the concept of the yin and yang that balances the forces in nature; both good and bad scents need to be studied in order to determine a scent that has the most balanced impact on a person.

The battered and stressed out population of today?s modern era consider Aromatherapy as their lifeblood. Stress and worries have increased along with the material comforts that have been developed through technology. Most people do not have the inclination or the time to indulge in the old fashioned methods of relaxation. Aromatherapy provides people these days with a simple and economical solution for stress.

It will often consist of fear and worry, and some organisms may even experience physical signs such as nausea or chest pains. Anxiety is a complex emotion, and is composed of a number of different elements. Some of these elements are somatic or cognitive, and the body will prepare itself to deal with an external threat. The heart rate speeds up, and the blood pressure is increased. The various muscles in the body will also receive elevated levels of blood. At the same time, the functions of the digestive system will slow down.

People who have anxiety will generally have a sense of dread. A number of voluntary and involuntary processes will take place in the body, and the goal of these processes is to get the organism away from the source that is causing it to have anxiety. Anxiety is an important emotion, and is designed to increase the survival rate of organisms. In humans it appears that anxiety comes from the hippocampus and amygdala, two regions of the brain. When a person senses bad odors or tastes, there will be a large amount of blood flow which will be present in the amygdala. The evidence also shows that medium levels of anxiety will be present in this situation as well.

Based on these studies, it appears that anxiety is designed to keep humans and other organisms from eating food or objects that may be harmful to their well being. While anxiety is normal, a person that has excessive amounts of it may have what is called an anxiety disorder. In extreme cases, people with anxiety disorders may have strong cases where they are terrorized. Anxiety disorders are broken down into phobias, panic disorders, generalized anxiety disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorders. Someone who is suffering from a phobia will have an abnormal amount of fear of a specific object or situation. People who have phobias tend to have extensive imaginations, and realize that their fear is often irrational.

When a person suffers from a panic disorder, they will have extreme panic attacks, and may have dizziness or breathing problems. These attacks will typically reach their height in about 10 minutes. Generalized anxiety disorders are common, and effect a much larger portion of the population. It is prevalent in both men and woman, and is characterized by long periods of anxiety that are not related to any specific object or situation. With the obsessive compulsive disorder, the individual with have an obsession or compulsion when it comes to specific types of behavior. People who suffer from this disorder will see the need to do something obsessively in order to reduce their anxiety.

Many people who have this disorder need to be extremely clean, and are afraid of germs. To reduce their anxiety, they will wash their hands numerous times in a single day. There are two primary methods that are used to help those who are suffering from anxiety, and this is either therapy or prescription medications.

Peppermint Essential Oil is made by distillation of the flowering herb and is normally a pale yellow or greenish coloured liquid. When inhaled it can reduce a fever, relieve the feelings of nausea and vomiting, improve a person’s digestion as well as soothe the respiratory system of the body.

There have been various studies performed which show the oils ability to improve a person’s sense of taste and smell as well improve concentration levels and mental clarity in those that have inhaled the oil.

There are several ways in which peppermint essential oil can be used either by inhalation, rubbing on to the reflexology points on a person’s feet, diffused into the air (spray) or drops poured into a therapeutic bath.

Below are provided some ways in which peppermint essential oil can be used.

Inhaled as steam for congestion relief. What you need to do is put a few drops of the oil into a large bowl of hot water and then you should place a towel over your head, lean over the bowl and inhale the steam that is rising from it.

Motion Sickness. Just place a few drops of peppermint essential oil on a tissue and inhale.

Headache. Put a few drops on to a cool wet towel and use as a compress on the forehead or you could massage it into the neck, back, temple and/or forehead (however do not forget to dilute with a carrier oil prior to placing on the skin).

Digestion. Place several drops of diluted oil (dilute with carrier oil) on to the stomach and massage it in. Or else you could just rub some pure oil onto the bottoms of your feet.

Breath Freshener. Just place several drops on your tongue.

Therapeutic Bath. Put several drops of the diluted oil into a tepid bath and it will help to relieve stomach problems, nasal congestion, headaches or menstrual cramps. However if you do not have any essential oil then get a cloth bag and fill with several handfuls of dried or fresh peppermint leaves and put in the water while you bathe.

It should be me remembered that caution should be taken when using any essential oil and they should be diluted with a carrier oil when being used externally to prevent any adverse reactions. Certainly a skin reaction may occur if the dosage used is excessive and it should be kept away from eyes at all times.

However, below are some precautions which you must take when you are using peppermint essential oil.

Be careful when giving it to children under the age of 5 as the menthol can cause them to react by choking.

Do not apply this oil to the faces of infants or small children.

At no times should peppermint essential oil be ingested unless it is under professional supervision.

Women who have a history of miscarriage should use peppermint essential oil with caution.
Certainly large amounts of this essential oil may trigger a miscarriage and the same precautions should be taken by women who are breast feeding their babies.

There are a number of side effects associated with using peppermint essential oil and these are:-

If it is incorrectly used peppermint essential oil can cause dermatitis and other allergic reactions.
For some people taking enteric coated capsules may have a rare reaction to the product such as skin rash, heartburn, slow heart rate and muscle tremors (and therefore this product must be avoided).
Large ingested doses of peppermint essential oil may result in a person’s kidney’s becoming damaged.

It is advisable that at no time should you use peppermint essential oil in conjunction with any other homeopathic treatments.

Before you purchase essential oils, you might want to know some important facts to guide you.

Modern scientific evidences have proven that essential oils have both emotional and medical benefits. Through scientific research and greater awareness, we have started to appreciate nature’s blessings.

Aromatherapy is an example of a healing method once considered an alternative therapy that has since found its way into mainstream medicine. Most of us are not even aware that we are already practicing aromatherapy in our daily existence. When we stroll through a garden full of herbs and flowers or when we light a scented candle while taking a bath, we are already practicing aromatherapy. Almost all of our bath products contain some essential oils.

Nowadays, this practice is quite popular owing to its availability and ease of use, not to mention its effectiveness.

The essential oils used in aromatherapy can either be used alone or in pairs to make a desired effect. Prior to their use, we should know the effects of these oils on the body and how they really work.

These essential oils can be found in various plant parts such as twigs, leaves, flowers and bark, and even in the fruit rind. Basil is found in the leaves, sandalwood is extracted from wood, while rose comes from flowers.

The methods used for the extraction of these essential oils are both time-consuming and costly. The whole procedure requires a high level of expertise. For instance, to produce just four to five teaspoons of oil, we need around two hundred and twenty pounds of roses.

Pure essential oils are very expensive, based on the amount of plant material required to produce them, yet they are so highly concentrated and effective that just a few drops will give you your desired effect.

Synthetic oils may be purchased at a more affordable price, but they are devoid of the healing efficacy of natural oils.

So keep this in mind before you purchase essential oils.
